The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc. (The Bridge) is a non-profit organization serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness and offering prevention services to the community. We hope you will join us as we continue to prevent abuse, break the cycles of violence and homelessness, and rebuild precious lives.

A special note from The Bridge Executive Director, Deborah Moseley

As we continue to rebound from the intensity of Hurricane Ike, we must pause to be thankful that it was not significantly worse for us as an agency. We also send our heartfelt condolences to those in our community who lost loved ones, those who lost property and for everybody who suffered the financial and emotional trauma wrought by the storm.

Hurricane Ike inflicted the following hardships on us:

Our shelter residents had to be evacuated, causing additional anxiety and even fear for the women and children, most of whom were already in hiding from abusive family members. Our clients were unable to return to the shelter for over a week;
We lost hundreds of dollars in food at our shelter when we lost power;
Our salary cost increased because of staff working round the clock at the shelter during the storm who were unable to leave;
We were unable to return to our administrative offices for two weeks due to the lack of power and significant damage to the bank building in which we are housed;
We are dealing with a backlog of work.

Some of the blessings bestowed by Hurricane Ike were:

Our employees worked hard to remain in contact with our clients and to reassure them of our support;
Shell generously donated a generator and the diesel to power it; allowing us to reopen the shelter before full power was restored by the power company;
Our employees worked hard to clean up the grounds at our shelter and permanent housing facilities; that was after cleaning up their own homes;
We were able to offer debriefing sessions to both shelter residents on their return and our employees;
We were able to compensate all employees for work hours lost due to the storm – reducing the financial and emotional hardship to their families;
As an agency, we operated as a TEAM to support our clients and ourselves.

We have many blessings and Ike provided us with an opportunity to recognize and appreciate them.
